In May 2016, the Villa Ficana Ecomuseum of earthen houses was born in Macerata, part of the Macerata Museums network, a nineteenth-century village made up entirely of earthen houses. The Ecomuseum is aimed at enhancing collective memory, history and local traditions through experiential paths and entertainment activities. But it is also a study and dissemination center dedicated to the culture and construction technology of raw earth, the particular technique used in the construction of the village.

There is also a wide range of didactic proposals offered to schools of all levels, associations and citizens, to approach the material “earth” in its different forms and local tradition in its most diverse facets.

Accessibility

Part of the material heritage preserved at the Ecomuseum Visitor Center is accessible tactfully and through audio guides in several languages, available through the free izi.TRAVEL application.

History of the ecomuseum

Ecomuseo delle case di terra di villa ficana, particolare interno - Musei Macerata

The birth of the Ecomuseum is the culmination of a twenty-year work which, through the direct involvement of citizens, has had the result of rediscovering the value of a part of the city – of its history and traditions – reaching the difficult goal of changing the common feeling, social consideration, towards Ficana and towards earth architecture. In 2003 the Superintendence for Architectural Heritage and Landscape of the Marche has affixed the constraint pursuant to Legislative Decree 490/99. This constraint, which requires compliance with protection regulations generally applied to buildings and artistic objects, is particular, atypical and innovative of its kind, no longer aimed at a single building but at an entire neighborhood.

The Ecomuseum of the Villa Ficana earth houses was created with the support of the Municipality of Macerata and thanks to the work of GRUCA onlus, the International Association of Raw Earth Cities, the Oz cultural association. The volunteers of the National Civil Service and the European Voluntary Service who work there make the Ecomuseum a lively and dynamic multicultural center.
